The United Religions Initiative (URI) Asia Executive Council ( AEC ) meeting was held in Seol, South Korea from 23rd to 25th of October, 2009 under the chairmanship of Ven. Dr. Jinwol Lee, Secretary General of Asia Executive Council The meeting was sponsored by the Cultural, Sport and Tourism Ministry of South Korea.
The AEC consisted of URI Global Council Trustees and Regional Coordinators from Asia as its members. Ms. Sally Mahe, director of Organizational Development, URI, participated in it as special representative from the URI Global Office in San Francisco, USA. With the objective “To Revive the Light of Asia for World Peace” AEC is established in letter and spirit with the Preamble, Purpose and Principles of the URI. “ The purpose of the United Religions Initiative is to promote enduring daily interfaith cooperation to end religious motivated violence and to create cultures of peace, justice and healing for the Earth and all living beings.” The AEC is established to further strengthen and enhance the interfaith network in the Asian region. It also aims to promote culture of peace, tolerance, healing and reconciliation.
The AEC has seriously deliberated the issues of global warming and climate change, eradication of poverty, to raise awareness and mobilize movement against disarmament and nuclear threats and last but not the least to promote peace education and public health. The AEC firmly stands against the religiously motivated violence and all forms of discrimination and extremism.
We are peace builders and we believe in the freedom of religious expression and indigenous traditions. We reaffirm our faith and commitment to build a peaceful and harmonious society.
